Making Marks @ The Australian War Memorial

Some time ago I participated in a collaborative project, Making Marks, instigated and nurtured by Artist Gali Weiss. It is a long term collaboration between with several Australian women artists and women in Afghanistan, and was the second of three projects undertaken to show active solidarity and support for women in Afghanistan.

As well as show solidarity, the projects have provided a forum for Afghan women’s voices of their experience of war and oppression in Afghanistan to be heard. The collections were sold to raise money to support women and women’s education, amongst other things.

Making Marks, a project of 43 handkerchief artworks, was acquired by the Australian War Memorial. The recently opened ANZAC Hall will have a permanent display of a collection of the handkerchiefs – regularly to be changed in rotation.

I was totally delighted to see that my collaborative artwork with Nurgus was selected for the first exhibition.

This work was also the piece chosen to represent our project in the current AWM Magazine, celebrating the opening of these new galleries.

I have yet to visit the gallery – here are some images provided by the project’s founder, Gali Weiss. Anyone wishing to contribute financially to the support of Afghan women can do so via Gali’s website.
