These images are from a project Alex Pinder (www.alexpinder.com) and I ran in India in 2005/6. We were invited by World Vision to work with many communities throughout the country to bring awareness to child labour issues. As we were working mainly with children affected by this, we decided to focus on their childhood – play, creativity, and fun and giving them the opportunity to tell us and each other about their lives through art and drama. We were both surprised and saddened by the harshness and violence that is part of a child’s everyday life in some parts of India – and also both surprised and heartened by these children’s ability to find joy and happiness in art and in making fun of their oppressors and difficult lives.
